Introducing the Digital Education Nook!
Harris County Law Library’s newest learning opportunity brings on-demand video content to all within steps of the Harris County courthouses in downtown Houston.
A Digital Content Access Point
The Digital Access Nook is an access point for digital collections from the Law Library’s Legal Tech Institute, the Harris County Attorney’s Office, and the Texas Office of Court Administration. Bring your headphone or use ours and immerse yourself in one of more than 40 videos focused on legal topics. With a variety of content in a fully accessible space, there is something for everyone in the Digital Education Nook!
Supporting Access to Justice
For self-represented litigants who visit the Law Library in search of information when they are unable to afford legal representation, the Digital Education Nook offers a Self-Help video collection. The collection - made available in collaboration with the Texas Office of Court Administration - provides short tutorials on legal processes that can keep marginalized individuals from accessing the courts, such as “How to file a case?” and “How to appear in court?” An inclusive learning opportunity, self-help videos are available in English and Spanish, and with the option of captioning for the hearing impaired and an accessible viewing station. By delivering this content for free in diverse formats and providing viewing equipment within steps of the courthouse, the Law Library is extending opportunities to individuals who might otherwise be excluded from this information and promoting their ability to access justice.
Texas attorneys have an ethical duty to keep ahead of the legal technology curve. For attorneys who need access to learning opportunities, the Law Library’s Legal Tech Institute offers videos of experts who visit to share their knowledge at live programs in the Harris County Attorney Conference Center. At the Digital Education Nook, attorneys can watch, learn, and earn Texas continuing legal education credit for free, which can help recent grads still struggling with student-loan debt and small firm attorneys, many of whom specialize in helping individuals with family, housing, and criminal defense issues, but may not have a big budget for staying up-to-date with the latest technology. In addition to offering these videos at the Digital Education Nook, the Law Library also makes content available on-demand, 24/7, via our Learn On-Demand Page.
Open Access to Government
In support of open access to government, the Digital Education Nook offers content from the Office of Vince Ryan, Harris County Attorney, on topics of interest to anyone who would like a chance to participate in their government. Current options include Voter Registration Law and Introduction to the Texas Open Meetings Act. Accredited by the State Bar of Texas for attorney continuing legal education credit, these learning opportunities are available to all at the Harris County Law Library.
