Law, Power, and Access: When the Legal System Meets the People It Serves

Speaker: Heather Holmes

Program description: In recognition of Pro Bono Month, this program examines the barriers that can make the legal system—and the information needed to navigate it—difficult to access and understand, particularly for people representing themselves in court. Through the lens of critical studies, we will explore how Affective Service, Access to Justice, and Critical Approaches to Systems and Power intersect to shape the experiences of people navigating the courts without a lawyer, and consider how attorneys, librarians, and other justice-system professionals can help make the law more navigable for the people they serve.
