The Eviction Crisis: What to Know if You're Facing Eviction in January 2021

As the word “pandemic” suggests, COVID has created economic and humanitarian crises around the globe, including close to home. Our virtual reference work has made clear how many Texans and Houstonians are facing eviction as a result of COVID-related economic hardship. Eviction is challenging in any circumstance, but particularly terrifying when the best way to keep ourselves and our community safe is to comply with the Harris County stay home order. Because of this, homelessness is even more dangerous than ever.

There is some hope for Texans facing eviction.

First, any Texan facing eviction should visit StopTXEviction.org. This website is a partnership of multiple legal aid groups around the state, and is kept as current and accurate as possible. StopTXEviction.org includes information about the Texas Eviction Diversion Program.

Second, Texans facing eviction as as result of COVID-related issues should visit the CDC web page to learn how to be protected from eviction through January 31. The federal moratorium on evictions was extended by Congress past its initial December 31 end date, and is expected to be extended past January 31. As the CDC webpage explains, anyone struggling to pay rent should read the CDC Declaration form, and if it applies to their situation the form should be signed and given to their landlord. The form is available in English and Spanish.
