Building Bridges to Justice: Introducing the LAWPod Squad

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice…"

As our nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we have an opportunity to reflect not only on the freedoms our founders envisioned but also on the enduring responsibility to ensure that justice is accessible to everyone.

The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all people are created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights. Eleven years later, the Constitution established the framework for protecting those rights, opening with a simple but profound promise: to establish justice.

That promise remains unfinished.

For many in our community, justice is not out of reach because of a lack of rights; it is out of reach because of a lack of access. Legal information can be difficult to find. Court processes can be overwhelming. Technology, transportation, and financial barriers often stand between people and the help they need.

At the Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library, we believe that access to justice begins with access to legal information.

That belief has guided our work for more than a century. It inspired the creation of LAWPods: private, technology-enabled spaces located within community libraries where individuals can connect with trusted legal information, virtual reference services, and community resources closer to home.

LAWPods have proven that when we meet people where they are, we remove barriers that too often prevent them from taking the first step toward resolving a legal issue.

But as we have watched this initiative grow, one lesson has become abundantly clear:

Access to justice is not the work of one organization.

It is built through partnerships.

That realization has led us to the next evolution of this initiative.

Introducing the LAWPod Squad:

The LAWPod Squad represents the next chapter in our commitment to expanding access to justice.

A squad is a small, organized team working together toward a shared goal. That definition perfectly captures what has already begun to take shape.

Working alongside the Harris County Public Library, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, and other community partners, we are building something bigger than a single program. We are building a coalition dedicated to connecting people with the legal information, resources, and services they need to navigate life's legal challenges.

The LAWPod Squad is grounded in three guiding principles:

  • Access: Meeting people where they are and removing barriers to legal information and services.

  • Connection: Bringing together libraries, courts, legal aid providers, community organizations, and government agencies to create seamless pathways to assistance.

  • Impact: Measuring success not only by the number of people we serve, but by the lives we help change and the stronger communities we help build.

These principles reflect something I have often said throughout my career: our goal is to move from interaction to connection. Information alone is valuable, but meaningful partnerships transform information into opportunity.

Building Bridges to Justice

The bridge has become a defining symbol of the LAWPod Squad because it represents exactly what we hope to accomplish.

Every bridge begins with a foundation. Ours is the recognition that the justice gap exists and the shared belief that access to justice should not depend on where someone lives, what they earn, or whether they know where to turn for help.

The substructure is formed by the partnerships that make the work possible. The Law Library, public libraries, legal aid organizations, courts, bar associations, educational institutions, and community organizations each contribute unique strengths. Together, they create the support system that allows the bridge to stand.

The superstructure is what people experience. It is the visible result of collaboration: trusted legal information delivered in community spaces, coordinated referrals, innovative technology, and services that help individuals move from uncertainty to confidence.

A bridge has little value if it leads nowhere. The destination for the LAWPod Squad is clear: a community where access to justice is not an aspiration but a reality.

An Invitation to Join the Squad:

The LAWPod Squad is not a closed network. It is an open invitation.

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we are reminded that building a more perfect union has always required people working together for the common good.

We invite courts, public libraries, nonprofits, educational institutions, government agencies, bar associations, and community organizations to become part of the LAWPod Squad.

Each new partner strengthens the bridge.

Each new partnership expands access.

Each new collaboration brings us one step closer to fulfilling the constitutional promise to establish justice for all.

The work ahead is bigger than any one institution. It requires all of us.

Because access to justice is not built by one organization.

It is built by a squad.
