The Law Library offers several self-help resources for pro se litigants. “Pro se litigant” refers to someone who is a party in a court case without an attorney. Find books and guides by visiting the library in person. A library card is not required for accessing the print collection. Legal print materials may only be used on-site and are not available for checkout. Recommended online resources are also included in this article and can be accessed remotely. These materials cover a variety of legal topics and are designed to make the law less daunting.

Print Collection

The Consumer Credit and Sales Legal Practice Series by NCLC – The goal of the National Consumer Law Center is to highlight consumer law for the benefit of justice and fair treatment for all, especially those whose income might prevent them from demanding legal accountability. Each book delves extensively into a consumer law related topic. Topics include the following:

  • Collection actions: defending consumers and their assets;

  • Credit discrimination;

  • Mortgage lending: loan origination, preemption, and litigation; and

  • Student loan law.

Nolo Press Books – The Nolo collection offers a more in-depth explanation of the law and your rights on a variety of given topics. Some guides include sample forms and letters. Information found here is not always specific to Texas and offers guidance relevant to residents of all states. The Nolo collection guides are available on the following topics, amongst many others:

  • Chapter 13 bankruptcy;

  • Estate planning;

  • Small claims court; and

  • Tenant’s rights.

The Harris County Public Library system offers a selection of Nolo Press books available for checkout. Visit the front desk for information on how to obtain an HCPL card.

Nutshell Series from West Academic Publishing – The Nutshells succinctly cover the law on a given legal topic. Information found here is not always specific to Texas and offers guidance relevant to residents of all states. The series includes the following topics, amongst many others:

  • Construction law;

  • Elder law;

  • Legal malpractice law; and

  • Sexual orientation, gender identity, and the law.

Pro Se Litigant Handbook – Created by staff at the Law Library, this publication focuses on the basics of getting ready for court and accessing forms. Also included is a directory of non-profit organizations that can provide legal aid and/or advice. Available in print when you visit the Law Library or read a digital copy here.

Online Resources

EBSCO Databases – Two EBSCO databases, Legal Information Reference Center and Legal Source, are available on-site and for remote access. Contact us through our Virtual Reference Desk for instructions on how to access these resources.

TexasLawHelp.Org – A great resource for self-represented litigants, TexasLawHelp offers guides on a variety of family and civil topics. Most guides include instructions, checklists, and court forms. The topics of the guides vary and include divorce, paternity, and occupational driver’s license.

Harris County District Court – Look up your assigned District Court to find checklists, some forms, policies and procedures, and other court information. Visit the Harris County District Clerk’s website to view the courts’ docket and case notes.
