Meet Our Spring 2026 Interns!

This spring, the Harris County Law Library is excited to welcome two outstanding interns from Rice University.  We’re delighted to spotlight their experiences and contributions to the team so far.

Meet Nur!

Hello everyone! My name is Nur, and I am a third-year junior undergraduate student at Rice University studying Managerial Economics and Political Science. I am incredibly excited to be interning at the Harris County Law Library this semester and to be part of a space that plays such an important role in serving the community.

I have always been interested in the legal field and plan to attend law school after completing my undergraduate studies. My experience at the Harris County law library has only strengthened that passion. One of the most rewarding parts of this internship has been the opportunity to meet patrons and see firsthand the real impact the law library has on people’s lives every day. Whether it’s helping someone find the right legal resources for their personal issues, or connecting them with a law librarian, it’s inspiring to witness how accessible legal support can make a difference on people’s lives. As someone who myself has seen my family undergo struggles that required legal assistance, I can only imagine how helpful a resource like the law library would have been.

As an intern, I have had the chance to operate LAWPods, assist law librarians, and interact directly with patrons seeking guidance. Being involved in this process has been both motivating and meaningful. I think it is one thing to just study law in theory or from a textbook in the classroom, but it’s another to see it actively helping people navigate real challenges.

Outside of my academic and professional interests, one thing about me is that I absolutely love to travel. My passport is not stamped too much just yet, but I hope to explore many parts of the world after I graduate, and I want my future career to support that goal! This is one of the reasons I am particularly interested in pursuing International Law. To prepare for that career goal, I am currently working toward language certificates in both Chinese and Arabic at Rice. I started learning Chinese about seven years ago and began studying Arabic more recently last year. Learning these languages has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my college experience and has truly added to my time at Rice.

I strongly believe that learning a new language is one of the best ways to truly understand a culture. If you enjoy traveling, or hope to in the future, I highly recommend learning or brushing up on the language of the places you visit! It makes a huge difference in how you experience a new environment and allows you to appreciate your time there even more. For example, I studied abroad in Taipei, Taiwan, during the summer of 2024, and it was one of the most transformative experiences of my life that I have had thus far. Being able to speak the language of the people I was interacting with allowed me to connect with them in a much more meaningful way and gain a deeper, more authentic understanding of the culture. The people I met were incredibly kind and welcoming and were always willing to help and share their perspectives. I made friends in Taipei that I keep in touch with to this day, and I don’t think we would have bonded had I not made the effort to connect with them and understand their culture! Taipei also has an amazing food scene, with night markets open late into the night offering fresh, delicious, and affordable food. Beyond that, there are endless things to do, like trying new foods, shopping, hiking, exploring waterfalls, swimming with turtles, and even riding motorcycles around the island.

Speaking of food, I think I use that as my way to get to know a new place best. I have always found myself centering all my travels around the different foods and restaurants I want to try. When I visited New York for New Years this past January, I made it a point to try every restaurant I had saved on my list of favorites, and I did the same when I traveled to Dubai last summer. That is one thing about Houston I have found to be amazing. I live in Atlanta, so since moving to Houston for college I have found myself trying so many different cuisines and restaurants in the area. If you can’t tell, I’m a big foodie! I have really enjoyed my time in Houston so far, and I have particularly enjoyed getting to experience the annual activities in Houston like the rodeo or the holiday zoo lights. I have a lot of family here, so I have always come to visit this city from time to time, but living here has really let me explore all it has to offer.

With my study abroad experience in mind, I would love to have more opportunities like it and look forward to traveling more in my profession in the future. I am grateful that I have this experience at the Harris County Law Library to set myself up for a successful career in law, because it has only reaffirmed my interest in the field and my passion for what I want to do. Seeing the real impact the library makes on Harris County patrons who come in requesting help and services is very rewarding. At Rice, I try to do the same through my involvement in student organizations, such as working on a consulting team and volunteering in the community to raise money for my dance team. I hope to continue making an impact on the world even after I graduate. I am incredibly thankful for all the experiences that have brought me this far, and I cannot wait to see what comes next!

Overall, my time at the Harris County Law Library has been an incredibly valuable part of my academic and personal journey so far. It has allowed me to combine my interests in law, public service, and global engagement in a meaningful way. It has also taught me so much more about just the professional work environment and as an undergraduate student I think that is incredibly valuable, and these are skills I will take with me to any career I pursue later. I have already learned a lot, and I can’t wait to continue my internship the rest of the semester. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to such an impactful organization.
