Women’s History Month has historically taken place during March and in 1980 “President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week.” Though this proclamation was made 43 years ago women still experience a gender gap to this day. The Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library would like to focus on the important women in the legal field, the achievements they have made throughout history and those they continue to make today.

Dr. Pauli Murray was the first to use the term “Jane Crow” to describe the racism and misogyny African-American women faced in the post-Reconstruction era leading up to the civil rights movement. Their* work and activism helped shape legal ideas and arguments for gender and racial equality in the decades leading up to the civil rights movement.

On this day, we celebrate the 101st anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. Last year, we as a nation celebrated the centennial of this historic day, and to honor the occasion, the Harris County Robert W. Hainsworth Law Library hosted a symposium. Titled “Votes for Texas Women,” The event focused on the history of women’s voting rights in the U.S. and the importance of inclusion in government and the law. A recording of the event is available for viewing on the Law Library’s website. Until September 22, 2021, licensed Texas attorneys can earn one hour of CLE credit for viewing the video, available here.
